Description:
Daguerreotype (1/6 plate). Image is an outdoor scene with nine adult men and one child posing on the porch of a tavern or other business. The men are posed behind a horse and open box buggy that is stationary in front of the porch. The man to the left of the post holding a child is identified as Robert Henry Van Rensselaer (b. June 17 1817, d. March 6, 1888), a farmer in Morris, Otsego County, New York. Van Rensselaer is holding his son, Robert Henry Van Rensselaer (b. December 30, 1845). In the image, the men are dressed in the fashion of the day - all in waistcoats, vests, cravats and wide-brimmed hats or top hats. A dog lays next to the horse's front legs. The image has a gold, hand-cut matte. The case is of brown leather with red, satin cloth inset on the inside of the front cover. On the front of the cover is a raised bouquet of flowers design surrounded by scroll work. This design is repeated on the back cover.
